Gerald L. Asmus - Class of 1945

 

Gerald Asmus has proven that one need not travel far from home to do great things. A life-long resident of Wyandotte, Gerald acts on the belief that people have a responsibility to support their community in all possible ways. In doing so, Gerald has achieved much for Wyandotte and the downriver community.

Gerald was first elected to the Wyandotte Board of Education in 1960 and served until 1976. During his tenure, he was Board President twice, he was Vice President and Treasurer during other terms. As a Board member he was instrumental in the construction of the Bacon Memorial Library Annex in 1962 and in 1970, with the major renovation of Theodore Roosevelt High School, Gerald participated in the Wayne County Association of School Boards and was a member of it's Executive Committee from 1968 - 1975, serving as President and as Treasurer.

Gerald served as a Chairman of the Wayne County Community College Reapportionment Committee in 1973. He received the Michigan Association of School Boards Distinguished Service Award in 1976. In 1992, Gerald was appointed to the Bacon Library Commission and subsequently appointed to the Bacon Memorial District Library. He was its first president, has served as secretary and is currently treasurer.

Gerald Asmus takes responsibility for children seriously. He was treasurer of Cub Scout and Boy Scout Troop #1773 from 1961 to 1971. From 1963 to 1968, he served as Chairman of the City of Wyandotte Youth Guidance Commission. Gerald was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Downriver Child Guidance Clinic from 1962 to 1968 and was Wyandotte's co-chairman of the building drive supporting what is now Downriver Guidance Clinic's Lincoln Park Office.

Mr. Asmus is also active in Wyandotte's Trinity Lutheran Church, serving on many boards and committees and as Executive Director from 1977 - 1987.

Gerald's community activities extend beyond the realm of education. For the past 10 years he has been a volunteer driver for patients at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, formerly the Michigan Cancer Foundation.

A member of the Wyandotte Historical Society and past member of the Wyandotte Kiwanis, Gerald has managed all this activity without neglecting his family: his wife Nancy, three adult children and seven grandchildren. In fact, he sometimes assists his grandson who requires 24-hour one-on-one car.

Gerald has never forgotten his roots at Theodore Roosevelt High School where he participated in National Honor Society, Senior Band, Drama, and several war time projects. Gerald has chaired all of the Class of 1945's reunions during the past 54 years.

Mr. Asmus is proud of Wyandotte and its schools. In turn, Wyandotte and Roosevelt High School are proud of Gerald Asmus and his significant achievements.
 

David Russell Miller (Milinski) - Class of 1959

 

David R. Miller has distinguished himself as a nationally renowned educator, psychologist, counselor, and author.

David Miller (Milinski) began his college training at Wayne State University. In 1968, he earned his B.S. in Secondary Education and in 1972, his M.S. in Educational Guidance and Counseling. His Doctorate was earned in 1981 at the University of South Carolina, with majors in Counselor Education and Developmental Psychology.

David began his career in education in 1968 in the Detroit Public Schools where he served as a Social Studies Teacher, a Guidance Counselor, and an Assistant Principal. His outstanding efforts earned him "Teacher of the Year" recognition.

In 1975, Dr. David Miller began his work at Bob Jones University as an Associate Professor of Psychology. His instructional responsibilities included the areas of Abnormal, Clinical, General and Personnel Psychology. It was at Liberty University (1981-1995) that Dr. David Miller served with distinction as Professor of Psychology and Professor of Counseling. His work focused primarily on child, adolescent, family, and sexual abuse victims and offenders.

Dr. David Miller has published seven books, written extensively in the areas of Psychology and Counseling, and travels across the nation conducting parenting workshops and seminars. Dr. Miller has appeared on numerous television and radio programs where he is recognized as a leader in his field.

In 1995, Professor David Miller established a Counseling Center at University Baptist Church. He served as Founding Director of the Counseling Center. Presently, Dr. Miller is a Therapist with Psychological Associates, a division of a large hospital system in Florida.

David and his wife, Linda, reside in Jacksonville, Florida where they enjoy their three married children and their grandchildren.
